Year 9

Welcome

This page has been put together for parents of Year 9 students, to provide the information needed to understand and support your child’s learning at this stage in their academic career.

Year 9 are a fantastic year group and it’s been a privilege to be their Head of Year so far. I look forward to working with them over the next important years as they continue to develop into successful and mature students.

Miss N Harrison, Head of Year 9 - harrisonn@chancellors.herts.sch.uk

This is a very important year for your son/daughter as they build on the learning made in Year’s 7 and 8 and aim to make rapid progress in all their subjects in the run up to their GCSE options being selected.

We have high expectations for all students and this includes consistently demonstrating excellent behaviour, engagement and independence in their learning. We also expect students to have a high attendance of over 97% and to be punctual to school and to all their lessons.

Finally, we also expect students to wear the school uniform correctly and with pride. We expect them to be brilliant ambassadors for the school – both internally and externally.

We will consistently challenge and support students to ensure that they develop into young adults that the school, parents and local and wider community will be proud of.

Form Tutors should be the first port of call if there is a pastoral issue regarding your son/daughter. Please contact their subject tutor if there is an issue specific to that subject.

Form Time

Year 9 will have a 20-minute form time each morning with their Form Tutor. Form time will cover a range of different activities including; reflecting on Achievement and Behaviour Points totals for that week, Silent Reading, Literacy and Numeracy, current affairs discussion and debating. Students will also have one assembly each week delivered by various members of staff on a range of matters.

Form Time is an essential part of the school day and students are expected to come to form time fully prepared to learn. Form time is exceedingly valuable and it is imperative that it is not missed through lateness.

Students should always have their reading book and correct equipment during form times.

Homework

Students should be completing 60 minutes of homework per subject per week.

Student Support

This year we will be looking at groups and individual students who may need additional support with certain subjects, and/or other support such as social development and raising aspirations. We will be in touch if this is relevant to your child.

Revision

Teachers are always on hand to support students if needed, and many subject teachers will have already shared revision techniques with their classes. Please monitor your son/daughter in their learning and encourage them to have well-presented and organised work. This will help them greatly when they need to revise their learning and prepare for module or end of year tests. Please support your child when they are revising.

Extra-curricular timetable

NB: PE practice and fixture timings can be found under Sport in the School Life and Extra-Curricular tab on the website. Additional fixtures and information can also be found on the PE Twitter page. Details regarding Drama, Music, Art and other extra-curricular clubs can also be found under the Extra-Curricular tab on the website.
